AI Visibility

How AI visibility differs from traditional rank tracking

Learn what AI visibility measures, how it differs from keyword rank tracking, and why both views are needed to understand search presence.

Traditional rank tracking records where a URL appears for a defined search query. AI visibility monitoring asks a different question: whether an AI-generated answer mentions a brand, cites one of its pages, or uses another source when responding to a prompt.

The unit of measurement is different

A rank tracker usually observes a query, location, device, search engine, URL, and position. AI answer monitoring observes a prompt, model or answer engine, response, brand mention, linked citation, and the other entities or domains that appear in the same answer.

  • Rank position describes placement in an ordered search result.
  • A brand mention records whether the answer names the brand, with or without a link.
  • A citation records whether the answer links to or explicitly attributes a source.
  • Share of voice summarizes how often a brand appears across a defined prompt set relative to competitors.

AI answers can vary between runs

Generated answers are not fixed result pages. Wording, cited sources, and even the entities included can change as models, retrieval indexes, and live web results change. A single response is therefore an observation, not a permanent ranking. Repeated collection on a stable prompt set makes changes easier to interpret.

Keep the prompt set stable

Change prompts deliberately and record when you do. Otherwise, a shift in visibility may reflect a different measurement set rather than a real change in how answer engines represent the market.

Use both views together

Rankings still show whether pages are discoverable in conventional search. AI visibility shows whether a brand or source enters generated answers. Looking at both helps separate a search-ranking problem from a mention or citation problem, and gives teams a broader view of how people can encounter the brand.
